Startingan academic spin-off, like starting any business, is not an easytask. Figuring out the right way to go around the process does nothave a specific formula, and making the spin-off successful will taketime. Creating successful academic spin-offs often means that manypotential business need to be started because not all of them willbecome profitable. However, by studying the factors involved inspin-off creation can help us have a better idea about what makes asuccessful spin-off.

Professorsfrom two universities in Barcelona (GSE and UAB) have done researchinto the best way to create contracts for university spin-offs tohelp them more likely to succeed. They have studied universities thatare the home to profitable spin-offs. What they have seen focuses onallowing innovative researchers to start profitable companies thatprosper in the long-term [1].

Differenttypes of contracts established between the financial and intellectualparts of the spin-off will create different work and businessenvironments. The contract proposed by these professors focuses onoptimising shares allocated to the intellectual founder(s), ensuringtheir implication in the project [1]. This means that the researchersees their own potential gains in the success of the business.

Theresearch also shows that the university transfer office of knowledgeplays an important role in the success of university spin-offs. Theactive participation of these centres can positively impact theresults of the spin-off.

Theprofessors work with a master program in Barcelona to providestudents with the basic information about launching academicspin-offs. The goal is for these students to have the skills andcompetences necessary to be able to work with spin-offs (and perhapseven academic spin-offs) in the future [2].
