Ready to be planted, the pencil of the Danish startup Sprouts has flourished throughout Europe and beyond, reaching up to 70 countries. Sprout pencils contain natural seed capsules. Once they are placed in a pot and watered, the biodegradable capsule dissolves and with the time the seeds inside sprout and grows into plants, flowers, vegetables, and herbs.
It's already five years since a curious plantable pen was discovered by the Danish entrepreneur Michael Stausholm, thanks to a Kickstarter-funded campaign launched by a group of MIT students. Today Sprouts is spreading the mindset and methods of sustainability to big companies as Coca cola, Disney, Ikea, and Toyota. With more than 10 million pencils sold, Stausholm does not intend to stop. No longer just writing pencils, but in early 2019 Sprouts hopes to plant new seeds in collaboration with some of the biggest global cosmetics brands, thanks to the world´s first makeup pencil, lip liners, and eyeliners that can be planted after use.
Sprouts startup: seeds of sustainable thinking? Stausholm says: "The demand for greener products is now here to stay, which serves as the basis of Sprout’s success."
